Why should I earn GSU Data Ready! Badges?

Why should I earn GSU Data Ready! Badges?

Data skills are highly valued by today's employers -- "the most lucrative skill[s] to have" and "the most valuable skill[s] you can learn." By earning GSU Data Ready! Badges, you demonstrate to potential employers that you are committed to growing the data skills that they look for in hires.

Applying for jobs?

Add your badges to your résumé or CV, to Portfolium (gsu.portfolium.com), or to the Licenses & Certifications section of your LinkedIn profile.

Describe the skills you learned using GSU's College-to-Career (CTC) Competency Skills – learn more at collegetocareer.gsu.edu

Got the job interview? Talk up your data skills! For example:

Talk about how knowing data analysis programs like R or SPSS will help you analyze data to improve the company's or organization's services.

Talk about how you can use Tableau to make interactive data visualization dashboards for company/organization client engagement.

Applying for graduate school?

Tell graduate programs what you learned and how you are now better prepared to be successful in their program.

The programs will see your initiative as great preparation for the data skills you'll be learning during your graduate studies.

The GSU Data Ready! Badges program resonates with the GSU's Strategic Plan, particularly with the following goals from the Beyond College to Career focus and Student Success 2.0 focus:

1.2 Develop students’ digital skills through an infusion of content into the general education curriculum and through certificates or micro-credentialing at the undergraduate and graduate levels.

3.2 Expand availability of high-demand degree programs and other credentials at the graduate level with attention to student needs around instructional modality (online, face-to-face, hybrid), affordability and connection to local, national and global workforce needs.

FAQs

What is a "digital micro-credential badge"?

A digital badge/micro-credential is a visual symbol of accomplishment. They can be awarded for any definable achievement and earned in many learning environments, games, or the workplace. We are using the GSU Stacks/Canvas system and the Badgr "Open Badges" system to award verifiable badges.

Who can earn the GSU Data Ready! Badges?
Current GSU students, faculty, and staff can earn the GSU Data Ready! Badges. A current and active GSU CampusID is required to sign in.

Can GSU Alumni or NON-GSU people earn the GSU Data Ready! Badges?

No. Only current GSU students, faculty, and staff can earn the GSU Data Ready! Badges. GSU Alumni and NON-GSU people cannot earn badges because the badge system requires a current and active CampusID.

Can GSU Alumni and NON-GSU people still attend data workshops?

Yes. GSU alumni and NON-GSU people are welcome to attend live workshops or recorded workshops -- but see our Workshops Etiquette & Policies page for applicable policies.

Is there a cost for earning the GSU Data Ready! Badges?

No. Attending the data workshops and earning GSU Data Ready! Badges is FREE!

Can I get course credit for earning the GSU Data Ready! Badges?

No. Attending the data workshops and earning GSU Data Ready! Badges is an extra-curricular, non-credit-bearing option for building your data skills. Sometimes professors will require earning badges in their courses for required or extra credit.

What is the time and effort commitment for attending workshops and completing the quizzes to earn the badge?
  • Software & Coding Training Badges: Each badge requires completing 2-3 workshops, typically about 5-7.5 hours of time commitment for the workshops in total. The number of total quiz questions to earn a badge typically range between 10 to 15 (roughly 5 questions per workshop) and are a mix of multiple choice, true/false, or matching. Once you score 100% on all the badge module's quizzes, you'll automatically receive your badge from Badgr.
  • Data Ready! Badge: The Data Ready! Badge video series has 9 videos averaging about 10-minutes apiece covering various foundational data concepts and tools. There are 10 total quiz questions to earn the badge. Once you score 100% on all the badge module's quiz, you'll automatically receive your badge from Badgr.
  • 5 Live Data Dive! Badges: Each of these badges requires attendance at 5 of the live in-person or live online synchronous Software & Coding Training workshops. Individual workshop length ranges from 1.5 to 2.5 hours. Instructors share the attendance codes during the workshops. Once you've attended 5, you complete the corresponding badge "quiz" by entering the attendance codes, then you'll automatically receive your badge from Badgr.
    • Attend 5 total = get BRONZE 5 Live Data Dive! badge
    • Attend 10 total = get SILVER 5 Live Data Dive! badge
    • Attend 15 total = get GOLD 5 Live Data Dive! badge
Does watching a recorded workshop count toward earning a badge?

Yes, but only for the Software & Coding Training Badges and for the Data Ready! Badge. You can attend a live workshop OR watch a recorded workshop -- both count to earn Software & Coding Training badges and the Data Ready! Badge. Recorded workshops do NOT count toward the 5 Live Data Dive! Badges -- you must attend live in-person or live online synchronous workshops for the 5 Live Data Dive! Badges.

Does attending a live workshop count toward earning a badge?

Yes. Attending a live workshop counts to earn all of our badges.

Why don't recorded workshops count toward the 5 Live Data Dive! Badges?

Because: The point of the 5 Live Data Dive! Badges is to require you to engage in a live, interactive learning environment. Why is that important? Because studies show that people learn better when actively engaging in hands-on workshop settings (versus passively watching recordings).

What if I miss an earlier workshop(s) in a series -- can I attend the later one?

Yes, but: You must watch the recording of the earlier workshop(s) before attending a later workshop, because later workshops in a series often build on the knowledge learned in the earlier workshops.

Can I attend a workshop if I haven't registered?

Yes, but: See our Workshops Etiquette & Policies page for details about registration, attendance, etc.

I did all the quizzes and I didn't get my badge -- what's going on?

Sometimes there is a delay in receiving the badge email notification or it showing up in the Badges tab -- check back in 1-3 days, and if your badge is still not showing, contact Dr. Mandy Swygart-Hobaugh, the Library's Research Data Services (RDS) Department Head.

Am I required to create a Badgr account to earn the GSU Data Ready! Badges?

No, but recommended. While not required to receive badges, we recommend creating a Badgr account so you can take advantage of Badgr's Backpack feature for easily sharing your digital badges with others.

Will my GSU Data Ready! Badge expire?

No. The GSU Data Ready! Badges do not expire. Your badge will have the issue date on it to indicate when you received the badge.

Is there a way to verify the GSU Data Ready! Badges to ensure their credibility?

Yes. Every badge page indicates that it's been verified, provides a Re-verify Badge button to verify on the spot, and includes an Independently Verify Badge link to Open Badges 2.0 Validator to validate the badge and verify the recipient.

I teach at GSU -- may I assign GSU Data Ready! Badges to students in my GSU course for required or extra credit?

Yes, please do! See our suggestions for ways you might integrate our badges into your course or program curriculum.

I teach but not at GSU -- may I assign GSU Data Ready! Badges to students in my Non-GSU course for required or extra credit?

No. Only GSU course instructors can assign GSU Data Ready! Badges for required or extra credit because only current GSU affiliates (students, faculty, and staff) can earn the GSU Data Ready! Badges. Non-GSU students are welcome to attend live workshops or recorded workshops, and Non-GSU instructors are welcome to assign workshops and create their own approach for having students verify workshop attendance. NOTE: We cannot track attendance for you.

Does attending a Data in the ATL talk or Data Empowered Event count toward GSU Data Ready! Badges?

No. Only workshops in which a methodology and/or a software application is taught and that involve learning specific data/methods skills count toward the badges; Data in the ATL talks and Data Empowered Events do not meet these specific outcomes.

I have more questions -- who can I ask?

Contact Dr. Mandy Swygart-Hobaugh, Head of the Library's Research Data Services (RDS) Department.
